The days are long, the humidity has committed, and everyone’s suddenly a guide to all at finding shade. The good news? This is also peak season for some of the pleasant summer days—water, outdoors, animals, and history included.

Here are great late-July ideas to add to your plans:

Late July Must-Dos in North Carolina 🗺️😄

1) Visit the USS North Carolina (Wilmington) ⚓🌊 Tour a real naval ship and soak up oceanfront history. Perfect for a full summer day—especially when you want something memorable that isn’t just “standing in the heat.”

2) Hike part of the Appalachian Trail (NC sections) 🥾🏞️ Try an early start (seriously—go early). The mountain views and trail scenery are worth it, even if your socks do not remain dry emotionally or physically.

3) Go to the NC Zoo (Asheboro) 🦁🌿 A great summer outing for families and animal lovers, with lots to explore in a way that doesn’t require you to pretend you enjoy heat exhaustion.

4) Explore Old Salem (Winston-Salem) 🏛️🍦 Historic streets, local charm, and that wonderful “I’m in another time period” feeling. Late July is a fun time to wander—then cool off with a treat.

5) See the Huey helicopter at the Guilford County Veterans Memorial (Country Park, Greensboro) 🛩️🇺🇸 This Vietnam-era Huey helicopter has been added to the grounds as part of a broader effort to honor veterans and bring more visitors to the site. It’s on permanent display alongside new flagpoles and a bronze sculpture, with plans for interactive kiosks to share historical context about the aircraft and military service—an up-close look at military history many people haven’t seen firsthand.
